The project will construct irrigation schemes in the towns of Chimunda and Paunda, each of which will cover around 1,000 ha. Civil works will include : • building supply canals to bring water from the Save River to each scheme ; • construction of pumping stations ; • construction of access roads and bridges ; procurement of electric pumps, generators and other equipment ; • establishment of a rural credit scheme for beneficiaries for the first cropping season ; • provision of inputs and agricultural tools provided. The irrigation works will help reduce smallholders’ dependence on rainfed agriculture. The project will also provide short-term produce storage facilities, which will help reduce spoilage.
