Description
The Emergency Water Supply Project for the Republic of Iraq will help provide adequate quantities of safe drinking water supplies to the target population. The project includes the upgrading and replacing of water supply and distribution schemes. The project also provides support to the Ministry of Municipalities and Public Works (MMPW) to improve its capacity to plan, manage, and supervise project implementation, as well as operation and maintenance, and through capacity building and training of the ministry staff. The credit will help finance the costs associated with addressing the urgent needs for safe and adequate water supply to nearly 250,000 people in Ghammas, Al-Nasr, Wasit and Maimona urban centers and surrounding communities who are currently suffering from unsafe water quality, inadequate water quantity and deteriorated physical infrastructure. The project outputs are : (i) providing nearly 35 million cubic meters (MCM) per year with clean and safe water supply ; (ii) engaging the Government of Iraq (GOI) on key policy dialogue in the sector ; and, (iii) providing technical, financial, and managerial training on aspects of water supply provision to at least 100 Iraqi professionals in the sector. The project outcome is the improved health of the population due to the decrease in water related diseases. Improvements to water quality and health impacts will be gauged against the results of baseline surveys to be conducted soon after project launch.
