Résumé
A multicomponent digital image processing technique for detection and evaluation of Landcover/Landuse changes in the sahel region of West Africa has been studied. The method involves a combination of linear transformations (Ratios, Image differencing, vegetation indices, overlays, etc) and multispectral classification. The linear transformations were used to separate change pixels from no-change pixels resulting in binary images. The binary images were combined with the classification results from two epochs using different masking procedures so as to assess the impact of human activities and that of natural phenomena on the landcover/landuse situation within the study areas. The application of method has been demonstrated in two areas within this region. One of the areas lies in north-western Nigeria very close to the southern boundary of Niger Republic. The second area lies in the north-central Niger Republic. Two groups of Landsat images were used. In the first group (Dry season) are Landsat MSS image set acquired in 1975 and Landsat TM image set acquired in 1986. In the second group (Rainy season) are Landsat MSS image set acquired in 1978 and Landsat TM image set acquired in 1989. The image processing is in two phases, the image preparation phase and change detection phase. (orig.) ;
