In arid and semiarid areas, ecosystem is fragile and water condition is a dominating factor for ecosystem. Because of the scarcity of precipitation, groundwater controlled by river flow is the main water source of floodplain forest. Over exploitation of water resource in arid area and the construction of large amount of hydraulic projects will influence the hydrological regime in the downstream area. In order to allocate water resource reasonably and to ensure the normal growth of floodplain forest, the study about ecological water demand and water supply is necessary.In this paper, the studying area lies in the floodplain forest in the middle and lower reaches of Yili Kashi River. The floodplain is characterized by plenty of water, moist climate and suitable growth condition for forest. Forest distributes widely in the floodplain, and is composed of arbor, bush and grass distributed discontinuously or interlaced. Total area of the floodplain forest is 7519 hm2, and the dense-leaf Populus is the dominant specices in most part of the floodplain. A nature reserve for Fraxinus sogdiana Bunge lies in the downstream with an area of 404.67hm2.The Penman-Monteith method is used to calculate ecological water demand quota of different vegetation types per month based on weather data. Ecological water demand quota equals to reference crop evapotranspiration multiplied by vegetation coefficient. Areas for different vegetation types are obtained from remote sense data and field survey. Then ecological water demand can be calculated.Based on the field survey of hydrology, geology and hydrogeology, a groundwater simulation model is developed with the Matlab software. Model parameters are estimated from soil types and groundwater observation data from 2006 to 2007. Then groundwater level in seven sections for two planning years and two flow regime is forecasted.Water consumption of floodplain forest at present is calculated from groundwater evaporation, and that in the future is forecasted. The results show that the minimal water demand of floodplain forest can be met in the future, but the normal growth of forest may be affected. The results about ecological water demand and supply in this paper can be used in water resource planning to provide the base for ecological protection and environment impact assessment
