Résumé
This thesis investigates the link between surface evaporation and the turbulent transport of water in the daytime convective boundary layer. In other words, it is studied in which way the atmosphere regulates evaporation of water from the land surface and how evaporated water influences the properties of the atmosphere. The research is split into two parts. In the first part of this thesis the feedbacks in the coupled land-atmosphere system are studied. First, a framework is developed that defines the interactions between the exchange of moisture and heat from the land surface and the thermodynamic properties of the convective boundary layer. Second, a mathematical expression is derived that quantifies the importance of all processes that influence surface evaporation during the day. This expression is tested on data from the midlatitudes (The Netherlands) and from a semi-arid region (Niger). The acquired knowledge on feedbacks in the coupled land-atmosphere system is applied to interpret climatic trends of pan evaporation.
