Résumé
In the Sudan courtyard houses exist in two versions : an enclosed type of courtyard house which is hardly in use and a “traditional type of courtyard house” which is found in the centre of the country and which has characteristics relating to environmental and sociological factors. The research embodied in this thesis study these courtyard houses with the objective of improving utilization, the indoor climate and reducing the cost of housing for low-income Sudanese families who constitute the vast majority of the population. The traditional type of courtyard houses are found to be wasteful of building materials and of land which makes them both expensive to build and costly to be provided with services. In addition they only provide standards of utilization and comfort which leave much room for improvement. The studies conducted indicate that re-evaluation of these houses and adaptation of the “enclosed courtyard type of houses” could achieve the basic objectives of this research work.
