Résumé
It is perceptible that the planning of urban areas in the Sudan is often bound to fail. For instance, the previous attempts of Greater Khartoum master plans had failed before attaining their objectives. Generally, the reasons behind the failure of urban planning in the Sudan are to a great extent attributed to absence or lack of adequate and reliable information about urban areas. In addition to that, is the present situation of the Sudan, which is characterized by a vast area with poor infrastructure and weak economic structure. Moreover, the high dependence of the Sudan on traditional techniques in collecting data have proved not satisfying for urban planning needs. All these reasons collectively, have increased the dimensions of the problem. Therefore, this study is devoted to find other alternative means of data collection in order to overcome this handicap. RST is the most appropriate worldwide information source tool today. It has surpassed the traditional techniques of data collection in terms of reliability, promptness and cheapness of obtaining information. Urban planning is a sequential process leading to the improvement of the environment of urban areas from the undesired existing situation to the desired one in the future. Since, the rational planning, to a great extent depends on the availability of adequate, appropriate and up-to-date information, these tools are necessarily required to satisfy this demand. Therefore, this study intend to show what extent RST can play a role, as an appropriate information source tool, throughout the urban planning process, particularly in the Sudan. Greater Khartoum as the largest urban centre in the Sudan is chosen as a case study area to fulfill the objectives of this dissertation.
