Titre : Sustainable Development Project in Yingxi Village, Yanchi County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (China)

Pays : Chine

Numéro projet : CPR/SGP/OP4/Y3/RAF/2010/10

Domaine : Climate Change Mitigation

Durée : 2010/2011

Bénéficiaires : Ningxia Center for Environment and Poverty Alleviation

Targeted Location and Population : The project site is located in the eastern part of Ningxia, southern edge of Mu Us Desert and at the junction zone of Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and inner Mongolia. It is a typical semi-arid area of semi-agricultural and semi-pastoral areas and local farmers’ dry-land farming can only rely on the weather. Sheep raising is the main income of the locals.
Problems : The main problems in the project sites are drought, water shortages, lack of resources, a serious resources waste and extreme desertification of grassland resources. The backward lifestyle and farming production have finally increased the waste of resources and carbon emission.
Solutions/ planned activities :
1. Promote rural environment-friendly facilities including energy-saving stoves, energy-saving heatable brick beds, solar heating houses and stoves and "trinity" biogas facilities ?Including biogas digester, pigsty and toilet ?to help farmers to establish various household ecological model.
2. Implement alternative livelihood activities such as building sheep stall and microbial storage feed tank, artificially planting grass and planting economic forest with the purpose to reduce human destroy behavior on the grass.
3.Plant farmland shelter belts to reduce wind and sand damage to agricultural production and to increase the rate of forest coverage and farmers’ income.
4.Support women and family industry development through providing local women with micro-credit finance to promote farmers’ income.
5. Establish New Energy Facility Maintenance Group in the project area.
6. Raise farmers’ environmental awareness, especially on renewable energy using and climate change thorugh training and workshop.

Caractéristiques et résultats
1. 40,000 Mu of natural grasslands in 4 villages were made available for environmentally protective use. 1,056 Mu cultivated grasslands were fostered to increase the output of forage grass and the green coverage.
2. A household-based energy-circulation system was established by supporting farmers to build energy-saving facilities and to use clean energy.
3. It raised awareness of environmental protection and promoted the idea of an energy-saving among farmers through trainings programs.
4. Household income was increased and overall capacities of women were enhanced through microcredits project.
5. It also strengthened its capacities in implementing capacity of comprehensive environment projects, coordinating during the project implementation, etc.
