Proud of our deserts while combating desertification (Namibia)

Titre : Proud of our deserts while combating desertification (Namibia)

Pays : Namibie

Numéro projet : Nam-OP3-1-06-03

Domaine : Land Degradation

Durée : 2006-2009

Bénéficiaires : Gobabeb Training and Research Centre

The project goal is to raise awareness on the benefits of deserts to livelihoods in Namibia, and their comparative advantage in terms of Vision 2030. The second goal is to maintain productivity of natural resources, as elaborated in Vision 2030 and our National Development Plan through recognition of the implications of desertification.

Project Characteristics and Results
The environmental benefits produced by the project include raising awareness of environmental issues. Through training programs that were held at Gobabeb and throughout Namibia, the importance of biodiversity was a main focus. For example, every group trained at Gobabeb in 2006 and 2007 went for an environmentally focused walk where they learned the importance of biodiversity. The training at Gobabeb focuses specifically on desert fauna and flora, their unique adaptations, and their role in desert ecosystems. In addition, with help of funds from IYDD, the Eduventure (a SGP project) collected biodiversity data which Gobabeb helped make accessible to all relevant stakeholders. Various stakeholders and steering committee members wrote several articles on the importance of biodiversity in the environment. The environmental benefits of biodiversity were addressed in all public lecturers, presentations and workshops held during the project as well as the publications prepared and disseminated. The link between desertification and poverty was emphasized during the project period, particularly by raising awareness on the link between desertification and its underlying social causes and effects. The group also aimed to address land degradation in arid, semi arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting from various factors including climatic variations, but primarily human activities.
Through the nation wide program, teachers in Namibia have included desertification issues in their teaching. At least 300 teachers (colleges of education in Namibia, university of Namibia and Rossing future teachers) were targeted. Teachers were provided with the desertification kit. “I always use to think desertification means when deserts become bigger, after this presentation I now have a clear understanding of what the term mean.” Anonymous at Gobabeb Many Namibians have gained greater awareness and understanding of desertification through the numerous newspaper and magazine articles and radio talks. For example, the IYDD t-shirt, which had the slogan of IYDD—proud of our deserts while combating desertification – translated into all local languages, also helped people understand this project.
