Mali

Titre : Mali Out-of-School Youth Project (Projet d’Appui aux Jeunes Entrepreneurs –PAJE)

Country : Mali

Sector : Education (FEED THE FUTURE)

Project Timeline : 10/01/2010 - 09/30/2015

Project description
The Mali Out-of-School Youth Project (Projet d’Appui aux Jeunes Entrepreneurs –PAJE) activity provides access to quality instruction in literacy, numeracy, life skills, and technical and vocational training to youth who have never been to school or have dropped out of school to respond to the changing needs of the Malian economy. Due to its cross-cutting nature, the project is jointly-funded by USAID/Mali Education, Accelerated Economic Growth and Governance units. Its strategy build on existing opportunities identified during the Mali Youth Assessment, conducted by Education Development Center in April and May 2010, and includes : (i) growing awareness by public authorities of the challenges faced by out-of school youth ; (ii) growing government investments in training and assistance programs for youth ; (iii) the existence of good youth support models ; and (iv) the youth themselves who have the potential and the will to contribute to society, both socially and economically, but lack essential skills and knowledge to catalyze this contribution.

The goal of the program is to enable over 12,000 Malian youth to become educated, economically productive and civically engaged citizens while improving their employability by 2015. Specifically, the activity will increase the relevance of non-formal basic education and vocational education to the job market and enable youth to acquire basic academic knowledge, skills and attitudes ; enhance entrepreneurship and the ability to be job creators, particularly in rural areas and in the agriculture sector ; increase youth civic engagement ; and integrate information and communication technologies while addressing gender equality constraints.

Total obligation : $30,000,000
