Titre : Improving access to energy services in Mozambique. Photovoltaic systems in isolated rural areas

Pays : Mozambique
Localisation : Muipite, Meloco, N’cumpe and Chipene in Northern Mozambique

Durée : 2008 - 2012

Contexte
The communities of Muipite, Meloco, N’cumpe and Chipene in Northern Mozambique are not included in the country’s short term electrification plans. Rural communities are extremely poor and there is no better way to render electrification viable. Photovoltaic systems are considered as the only form of clean and reliable energy available in those areas, which is why the project aims to provide PV systems to a number of households, schools and health centres.

Objectifs
1. Increase access of population to different sources of energy, thus improving quality of life of the population and contribute to poverty alleviation
2. Improve access of rural population to electric power through supply and installation of 950 photovoltaic systems in the rural communities of Muipite, Meloco, N’cumpe and Chipene in Northern Mozambique : Electrification of 8 schools ; 4 health centres and 938 households.

Impact
1. Around 89000 people, in households, schools and health centres, in the 4 rural communities will have access to electricity.
2. Small Businesses can open longer hours, increasing economic activities and sales and sell fresh products using freezers.
3. Health Centers can store vaccines and saty open in the evenings.
4. Quality of life has improved with good lighting for reading, studying, household chores as well as access to information.
