Description
The objective of this study was to develop and optimize a design for a low-cost, culturally appropriate, single-family dwelling blending traditional materials of adobe with renewable energy technologies for the arid dessert region on the Tohono O’odham nation in Arizona. A detailed thermal network model was developed to simulate a double-wall design including an inner structural adobe wall and an outer insulative adobe wall. The outer wall thickness was optimized to a width of 6 inches with an inner wall of 12 inches. A detailed 3-D design for the dwelling was developed using solar technologies. The design incorporates passive solar heating and cooling features along with a stand-alone photovoltaic system while complying with international and local adobe building codes and with indigenous building traditions. Building materials for the house have been purchased, and construction has begun on the TO nation near Tucson.
