Titre : Water for Livestock in Garissa and Isiolo Counties, Northern Kenya

Pays/Région : Kenya

Numéro du projet : 7F-08435.01

Phase en cours : 01.01.2013 - 31.12.2013

Partenaires chargé de la mise en œuvre : International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUN) in consortium with Kenya Red Cross Society, and Adeso Technical consultants : ADCL Ltd associated to BG Consulting Engineers CH and ASAL Ltd.

Contexte
The context of arid zones in Kenya calls for a greater emphasis on preventive approaches and drought risk management both on local and regional scales. Surface water facilities, provided by low cost systems with simple maintenance alongside rangeland management are a key element of water supply for livestock and drought resilience in North Kenya where more than 80% of the population are pastoralists.

Présentation
The arid and semi-arid lands of Kenya, mainly inhabited by pastoralists, have been badly affected by the increasing frequency of drought cycles, which in 2011 lead to the death of a great part of the livestock due to larger distances to water points. The presence of the large Dadaab refugee camps has also exacerbated the pressure on the fragile environment (water resources, land degradation, etc.). Sustainable solutions to supply water for livestock already exist and are part of ancient and efficient coping strategies, on which this project is based.
