Building Resilience of Communities Living Around the Northern Pistachio Belt (NPB) and Eastern Forest Complex (EFC) of Afghanistan through an EbA Approach

Afghanistan

Titre : Building Resilience of Communities Living Around the Northern Pistachio Belt (NPB) and Eastern Forest Complex (EFC) of Afghanistan through an EbA Approach

Pays : Afghanistan

GEF Project ID : 5664

Focal Area : Climate Change

Approuvé le : 2014-03-24

Organisme d’exécution : National Environmental Protection Agency

GEF Agency : UNEP

Contexte
Climatic change is expected to result in further increases in the average temperatures across Afghanistan, reduced overall annual rainfall and increased incidents of excessive rainfall. All of these impacts will lead to an increased occurrence and severity of extreme weather events. These include floods and droughts which will further intensify degradation of the NPB and EFC forests.

Description
Project Objective : To build resilience and reduce the vulnerability of local communities living around the Northern Pistachio Belt (NPB) and Eastern Forest Complex (EFC) of Afghanistan to the effects of climate change by improving watershed functioning through Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) approaches. Expected Outputs
The proposed project will be implemented through the following three components :
1 . Component 1 : Strengthening the capacity of national and local government and other stakeholders to address climate change risks through improving watershed functioning by using an EbA approach.
2. Component 2 : Community based watershed management using the restoration of degraded forest ecosystems to improve watershed functioning and generate ecosystem goods and services for increased climate-resilience of communities.
3. Component 3 : Upscaling and increasing knowledge of building climate resilience through improving watershed functioning as an EbA approach.
