4th Conference on Hydrogeology, Ecology, Monitoring, and Management of Ground Water in Karst Terrains

National Ground Water Association, United States

- 4th Conference on Hydrogeology, Ecology, Monitoring, and Management of Ground Water in Karst Terrains

  • Lieu et date : Safety Harbor, Florida, United States 27/28 February 2007

- Organisateur  : National Ground Water Association, United States

- Presentation

  • National Ground Water Association (NGWA) is conducting the fourth international meeting on ground water in karst terrains in Florida, which is home to many spectacular springs and karst features. Most of the region relies on water from karst limestone in the vast Floridan Aquifer.
  • The conference will be an international consortium of engineers, scientists, regulators, researchers, and students gathering to understand the science and management of ground water in karst terrains.

- Scientific and Engineering Importance of the Conference

  • Ever-increasing demands for development of ground water resources throughout the world accentuate the need to better understand the specific nature of karst environments.
  • Karst features are formed by the irregular dissolution of carbonates and characterized by solution channels, caves, and sinkholes.
  • Each karst region is unique and similar aquifer conditions seldom exist. Environmental changes in karst occur very rapidly and their full impact is often unpredictable.
  • Interdisciplinary and international cooperation for better understanding of many issues related to karst aquifer management and protection is therefore necessary.
