Weather-, climate- and water-sensitive decisions are made by millions of people worldwide each day. As part of the ongoing effort to improve security and sustainable living, WMO is holding this conference on the social and economic benefits of the products and services provided by the meteorological and hydrological community, especially the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and WMO members states.

The conference will provide an important occasion for representatives of various sectors of society to describe how the environment impacts them ; how weather, climate and water information helps them make decisions and reduce risks ; and to outline what changes would be needed to improve decision-making.

- Purpose of the Conference

    • Demonstrate the relevance of the activities of WMO and NMHSs to contemporary socio-economic realities ;
    • Ensuring a sustained understanding and appreciation of socio-economic benefits of hydro-meteorological services within the framework of meeting user-requirements, public-private partnerships and globalization ;
    • Underscoring that resources provided to pertinent services should be considered as investments rather than expenditures.

- Objectives of the Conference

    • Describe how the environment impacts the various actors of the society ;
    • How weather, water and climate information help them in the decision making process ;
    • Outline what changes would be needed to improve decision-making ;
    • Provide NMHSs leaders with an opportunity to hear about how their products and services are used ;
    • Understand where improvements are needed to increase the value of these services to civil society and the economy ; and
    • Help decision makers to understand the current capabilities, responsibilities and limitations of NMHSs.

- Envisaged Outputs of the Conference

    • A review and synthesis of the way everyday societal and economic decisions are influenced by weather, water and climate information and the benefit of this information to society ;
    • A review and synthesis of the development of weather, water and climate products and services and the costs of providing these services ;
    • An examination of the decision making process and how information providers need to adapt to decision-makers’ needs ;
    • Recommendations on the research and operational requirements for weather, water and climate information for more effective societal and economic risk management ; Specific plans to improve the cross-disciplinary, cross-sector exchange of knowledge between the providers and users of weather, water and climate information ;
    • A Conference statement based on the above
    • A Conference declaration to express political will.
