Résumé
The aim of this study was to analyse the physico-chemical aspects and biological properties of the propolis produced by Apis mellifera in the Northeastem Region of Brazil. lu order to achieve this, the samples were collected directly from the apiaries in Bahia, Pemambuco, Ceará and Piauí States, resulting in 60 specimens. The samples of propolis presented a brown coloration and soft consistancy at room temperature and were extracted with hot 80% ethanol. Using High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) and Ultraviolet-spectrophotometry (U.V. scanning) it was possible to group the specimens into six different types of propolis, more frequently found in the Northeastem Region of Brazil. These groups are represented by specimens CE3, PE3, PE5, BA8, BA11 and PIl. In the test for total flavonoids, the groups presented significant differences in the Tukey test. The group PE5 had the greatest flavonoid content (46.87 mg/g) whilst the group PE3 had the smallest « 1 mg/g). The differences in the chemical composition ofthe groups were detected by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), in which the groups showed very different chromatographic peak distributions. Besides this, it was also possible to observe that most of the compounds presented by the propolis of the BA11 group, showed apoIar characteristics. Concerning the biological analyse, it was observed that not all the propolis samples presented antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans. The BA11 group showed a high antibiotic potential. Groups BA8, BA11 and PE5 presented antiinflammatory activity, showing hyaluronidase enzyme inhibition of about 50%. For the other groups, these values were around 20 and 30%. Antioxidant activity was detected in all groups, except for PE3. The results demonstrated a great diversity in the propolis from the Northeastem Region, not only in their chemical composition but especially in their biological activity
