Résumé
Several researchers agree that population density, cropping system, genotype, climate and plantation age effect on dry biomass production and nutrient concentration of some compounds in nopal. Because there is limited information regarding the production and nutritional quality of hydroponically grown young cactus pads for human consumption. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the effect of population density on the production of dry biomass (DB) and the concentration of chlorophylla+b (Cloa+b) and some minerals in hydroponically grown young cactus pads.
This work was performed at the Center for Research and Development in Hydroponics (Facultad de Agronomia, Campus Marín, Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo León) and consisted of three trials, for the periods : September-October 2010 (Essay I) under open sky, in March 2011 (Essay II) in micro tunnel environment, and April-Augusts 2011 (Essay III) where the experiment was conducted in the open and micro tunnel. Was used to cultivate "Villanueva" a standar hydroponic nutrient solution (HNS) and a completely randomized design to evaluate three treatments for densities (PD) 20, 30 and 40 pl m-2.
The results show that the greatest production of DB occurred in the PD of 30 and 40 pl m-2 (153.4851 and 156.64 g m-2, respectively) (P ≤ 0.05) in Study I, the PD of 40 pl m-2 (414 115 g m-2) (P ≤ 0.05) in the Essay II, and the DP of 30 and 40 pl m-2(1290.81 and 1403.07 g m-2, respectively) (P ≤ 0.05) in the test III. The highest production of Cloa+b presented at PD 30 and 40 pl m-2 (34.51 and 35.36 g m-2, respectively) (P ≤ 0.05) in Study I, the DP of 40 pl m-2 (280.04 g m-2) (P ≤ 0.05) in the Essay II, and the PD of 40 pl m-2 (244.26 g m-2, respectively) (P ≤ 0.05) in Essay III.
In the Essay III, the concentration of P, K, Mg (Dry Basis) in the PD evaluated was not significant (P≤0.05), which allows to assume that the renewal of HNS allowed every 7 days failed to show competition between PD evaluated by these nutrients.
