In this work we studied the water quality parameters from the Yaqui Valley aquifer, Sonora (México), and identified water quality risk indices (IR) for agricultural use. The index was calculated with average values of the risk indices associated to water quality (IRagua), the salinity tolerance of crops (IRbi ológico), soil characteristics (IRsuelo) and a climate index (IRclimático). To determine IRagua, we studied the chemical composition and spatial distribution of 226 water samples. 164 of the selected samples for analyses evidenced an error of ionic balance less than or equal to 5% . The variables studied were pH, EC, the concentration of sodium (Na + ), calcium (Ca ++ ), magnesium (Mg ++ ), chloride (Cl - ), sulphate (SO4 = ), carbonate (CO3 = ) and bicarbonate (HCO3- ), as well as the actual salinity (SE), potential salinity (SP), residual sodium carbonate (CSR), permeability index (PI), exchangeable sodium percentage (PSI), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), SAR corrected , RAS adjusted , and RAS adjusted by the ratio HCO3 /Ca ; common schemes of water classification were applied. To calculate IRbiológico, we validated in laboratory the relative tolerance criteria published in literature. To determine IRsuelo, we assessed the texture, electrical and hydraulic conductivity, as well as the ability to retain water in the so il and its spatial distribution. IRclimático was determined according to the aridity index ‘precipitation/potential evapotranspiration’ (pp n /ET P ), on annual and monthly basis. To determine the sub-indices and the overall index, we established ranks for low, moderate and severe risk (values of 1, 2 or 3, respectively).
