Résumé
The objective of this Dissertation was to characterize structural characteristics and processes related to the potential used of Prosopis alpataco y Prosopis denudans (Fabaceae). The pre-reproductive (juvenile) stage was evaluated in plots, while the reproductive cycle was studied in native stands. Ontogenetic changes of juveniles, such as changes in biomass allocation and carbohydrate storage are described in Prosopis for the first time. Phenotypic plasticity for water availability was also assessed. For the reproductive stage, the dynamics of the production and mortality of all reproductive structures as well as the influence of reproduction on fruit composition and carbohydrate storage are described. After a sink-source experiment it was determined that reproduction is mostly supported by carbon reserves rather than current assimilation, so the next step was to evaluate with a new manipulative experiment the effect of carbon storage on flower and fruit production and trade-offs between growth, reproduction and structural and chemical defenses. The information obtained in this work is used to discuss the potential uses of both Prosopis species.
