Résumé
This thesis describes an investigation into the development of a conceptual catchment water balance model to estimate groundwater recharge in arid regions.An assessment is made of the characteristics and values of the components of a water balance, with particular emphasis on their characteristics in arid regions. The main mechanisms of groundwater recharge in such regions are identified. Subsurface flow from valley bed alluvium is an important recharge mechanism because it provides a continuous source of recharge to more extensive aquifers forming the plains.A one dimensional groundwater flow model is developed to simulate the valley bed alluvium taking particular account of its sloping bed. The characteristics of subsurface flow from the valley bed alluvium are investigated by applying the sloping bed model to a typical problem. The results then are used to develop a function which transforms rainfall input to the valley alluvium into the subsurface discharge which recharges the regional aquifer.The recharge mechanisms are incorporated into a catchment water balance model for estimating groundwater recharge. This model deals with the effects of spatial variations in the hydrological processes by dividing the catchment into different regions of broad hydrological similarity. To assess the catchment water balance model, a daily rainfall data generation process is employed to produce an adequate length of record with reasonably good spatial coverage. The data are then applied to the model and investigations are carried out to : reduce the complexity of the model ; identify the significance of individual parameters in the recharge evaluation ; assess the suitability of the model structure adopted for arid regions ; and demonstrate the flexibility of the model for various applications.As a result of this investigation, an 18 parameter catchment water balance model is introduced. The investigation revealed that the structure adopted for the model is suitable for estimating the groundwater recharge in arid regions.
