Résumé
The thesis considers the critical problem caused by over-extraction of ground-water in arid and semi-arid regions. Focusing on the Gefarah Plain of Libya, the use of geographic information systems (GIS) to support water resources management is studied.A demonstration integrated raster-based GIS was set up, using Libyan data, integrating a digitising software system and a linear programming module, and was used to display temporal changes in the water table, generate ’what if’ scenarios, and solve pixel-based LP land crop allocation optimisations. The practical demonstration also highlighted the need for the institution of better data collection systems in Libya as a basis for GIS.Basic actions to facilitate the information technology developments in Libya in this area are proposed.
