The area of study for this project includes large and small farms distributed along the northern part of Wadi Al-Miyah, the Eastern Province Cement Factory, the Al-Fadhli gas field and the Fazran oil field. The Umm Er Radhuma (UER) aquifer (Paleocene-lower Eocene age) is the main source of groundwater for agriculture. Chemical analyses show that the water abstracted from the Umm Er Radhuma aquifer is of adequate quality for use in irrigation. A numerical two-dimensional flow model was constructed to analyse groundwater flow in the Umm Er Radhuma confined aquifer and to provide a better understanding of the aquifer¿s response under continued abstraction of its water. The results provide that the Umm Er Radhuma aquifer is highly productive and characterised by considerable variation of transmissivities. After establishing the aquifer parameters through calibration and sensitivity analysis, the model was used to predict the aquifer¿s response under different pumping alternatives over planning periods of 10 and 20 years. Each alternative assumes two sub-schemes, one where traditional irrigation practices are employed, one where crop requirements are considered in greater detail. Drawdowns were not excessive in any scheme investigated, though careful irrigation practice was predicted to reduce pumping rates and drawdowns by 25-30%.
