Résumé
The conventional view that open water evaporation (EW) exceeds hydrophyte evapotranspiration (ETh) was overturned in a synthesis of published studies. The ETh/EW ratio in the literature review ranges from 0.83 to 3.0 depending upon species type, climate, state of growth and density. Lysimeter experiments in London and the Ichkeul Wetland, Tunisia, showed the ETh/EW ratio of the dominant species of hydrophyte (Scirpus maritimus) was 1.3. Areas of evaporative surfaces within Ichkeul (open water, and submerged and emergent hydrophytes) were obtained from Landsat MSS and TM data and were combined with measures of pan evaporation to give regional estimates of evapotranspiration (EEt). Surface temperature values and meteorological data obtained from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and the Fine Mesh Meteorological Model (FMMM), respectively, when combined gave estimates of evapotranspiration using the Mass-Transfer method. Results gained from Morton’s Complementary Relationship Lake Evaporation (CRLE) model were also obtained. These estimates were compared to a `true’ value obtained from a water balance study (Table 1). goodbreakmidinsertvskip 2.0cm endinsert The study highlighted that the use of remotely sensed data, at present, does not make a useful contribution to the calculation of regional evapotranspiration. In addition, it was shown that there is no routine, operational methodology to accurately calculate areal wetland evapotranspiration.
