Résumé
The goal of this thesis is to help change recent attitudes about what constitutes good housing in Libya. Its underlying premise is to help designers fulfill Islamic social needs and to stress the long-term costs of maintaining the built environment over the short-term costs of development. Likewise, this thesis proposed guidelines to help extend the lifetime of dwellings while maintaining equilibrium between the new technology and the old housing techniques. In order to achieve these goals, its method is deductive and rests on lessons of the past and analysis of climatic data and Islamic social 1 ife. The study is divided into five chapters. The introduction covers historical and existing conditions. Climatic and social design guidelines are covered in the second and third chapters. The fourth chapter consists of an assessment of selected traditional and contemporary housing types. The last chapter consists of a brief summary of design methodology, climatic and social criteria for various design considerations.
