Résumé
With the traditional courtyard house as the focus, the study examines the role of traditional material culture in contemporary Saudi Arabia. Through analysis and discussion of Saudi cultural traditions as exhibited by the traditional courtyard house, this study takes a critical look at whether the socio-cultural needs of the Saudis are being addressed by the Western-influenced modern house or villa. Since the discovery of oil in the 1930s, the country of Saudi Arabia has been radically modernized. The Saudi population has shifted from the small rural settlement to large urban areas. The cities are expected to continue this growth pattern. As population density increases, the need for appropriate housing increases. But this housing must meet the needs of the Saudi people and their cultural traditions. These needs are not currently being met with the contemporary villa. The traditional courtyard house, on the other hand, has evolved over hundreds of years to satisfy the socio-cultural requirements of the Saudi people. And this traditional house should not be ignored. An appreciation for the this house by the Saudis is necessary for current and future generations to develop pride in their cultural past. One way to develop this appreciation is through art education. With education, the Saudis can discover the best of the traditional courtyard house and incorporate those features with the best of the new housing designs, materials and construction methods. In this manner, Saudi Arabia can forge its own architectural heritage, a heritage that is in accord with the country’s deep roots in the tenets of Islam.
