Résumé
Dhofar, the southern region of Oman, lies on the true monsoon belt, receiving three months of light rain annually, which produces an environment unique in the more arid Arabian peninsula. This thesis represents a contribution towards the conservation of Dhofar. The physical environment of Dhofar is described in terms of the landforms, climate, geology and soils. Ecological zones characteristic of the Dhofar land regions have been determined by means of interpretation of three different types of remote sensing imagery : aerial photographs, space photographs and digital space imagery, augmented by fieldwork. Dhofar has developed rapidly since 1975, which has led to the exploitation of the region’s natural resources, and revealed its fragile and sensitive ecosystem. It is hoped that the output of this research will be of use to the planning authorities in Dhofar and particularly for the region’s conservation strategy.
