Titre : Increasing Youth and Women’s Involvement in Peace Building in Jimma Zone, Oromiya Regional State (Ethiopia)

Country : Ethiopie

Sector : Democracy, Human Rights and Governance

Project Timeline : 10/01/2013 - 09/30/2016

Project description
Religious institutions more effectively contribute to peace building processes in Jimma Zone of Oromia regional state through increased involvement of youth and women. Followers of the two major religions in Ethiopia—Christianity and Islam—have lived in mutual co-existence for more than a thousand years. The past few years, however, have witnessed the rise of tension among followers of different religious communities in western Ethiopia. On occasion, these tensions have erupted into localized violent episodes. The conflicts are also noted to have underlying factors such as political disenfranchisement and territorial claims. Escalation of conflict seems to be abated by the intervention of the federal government and by the arbitration by religious leaders, indicating the need for strategies and mechanisms for building communications, sustaining channels of constructive dialogue and laying out processes that lead to healing and reconciliation.

Total obligation : $300,000
