Water and Ecosystem Security in the Orange-Senqu River Basin (South Africa)

Afrique du Sud

Titre : Water and Ecosystem Security in the Orange-Senqu River Basin (South Africa)

Country : Afrique du Sud

Sector : Environment and Global Climate Change

Project Timeline : 06/01/2012 - 05/01/2015

Project description
Sixty-four percent of the one million square kilometers of the Orange-Senqu River Basin occurs in South Africa, with 25% in Namibia, 8% in Botswana, and 3% in Lesotho. The Basin provides critical water resources for the mining and manufacturing industry, agriculture, energy, tourism, residential services, and conservation. In partnership with local NGOs based in each of the four riparian states, this project will support scientific analysis and pilot projects that balance ecosystem requirements with human development needs to ensure efficient and lasting water provisioning services in priority areas in the basin. The project will also support awareness-raising and capacity building activities for the Orange-Senqu River Basin Commission (ORASECOM) and other key stakeholders to enhance an integrated water management approach.
