Project description
USAID/SA leverages the global CGIAR system technical research and management resources to improve the regional enabling environment, institutional capacity and policy for improved agricultural productivity and intra-regional trade. The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) manages activities under this mechanism through grants to local organizations in key program areas identified by USAID/SA in the Feed The Future Multiyear Strategy (FTF MYS). The CGIAR Fund services the broader objectives of the FTF initiative including three primary categories 1) advancing the productivity frontier through improved corps, animals and animal health ; and better management practices to address prevailing yield gaps ; 2) transforming production systems spanning biophysical, policy and social elements of key production systems where the poor and undernourished are concentrated, with key opportunities for research on soil fertility, water and nutrient policy and use, conservation agriculture, input/output markets and trade to reduce risk and increase agricultural system efficiency ; and 3) enhanced nutrition and food safety in particular for women and children through targeted research in the social sciences, diversification in production systems, reduction of post-harvest losses
