Land Cover Mapping of East Africa based on Satellite Remote Sensing Main Phase and Extension

Afrique de l’Est

Titre : Land Cover Mapping of East Africa based on Satellite Remote Sensing Main Phase and Extension

Pays : Afrique de l’Est

Identification du projet : GCP/RAF/287/ITA

Durée : 2000 – 2004 (extension)

Description
The overall development objective of the project’s main phase (1995-2000) was to strengthen the capabilities of East African and riparian Nile countries for a sound planning of natural resources’ development and their sustainable management, by producing reliable land cover maps and strengthening the national capacities in operational applications of remote sensing.
Three main objectives were underlined. The first immediate objective was to produce a regional assessment of East Africa land cover as a basis for regional and national level-planning and decision making, preparing satellite interpreted land cover data bases of the whole of East Africa. Secondly, the project intended to develop a network of local personnel trained in the utilization of remote sensing and GIS technologies for land cover inventory and monitoring. Finally, the project intended to develop a policy and mechanisms for data dissemination in joint cooperation with the national focal points established through the project support
The concept of the project and the operational modalities has not changed in the ongoing extension phase. The important expected result of this phase include : (i) the development of a national and regional Multipurpose Africover Database for Environmental resources (MADE) ; (ii) the development of a set of tools and methodologies for multipurpose land cover mapping ; (iii) the improvement of national and regional management planning, including socioeconomic and environmental analysis in support of sustainable development and environmental monitoring related to international conventions and initiatives ; and (iv) the strengthening of national level institutions, including capacity building and stakeholders involvement through the planning and implementation of operational activities, mainly at the subnational level
