Présentation
As in many parts of East Africa, population growth in highland areas in Tanzania is forcing migration into semi-arid areas. These areas are characterised by unreliable rainfall which rarely exceeds potential evaportranspiration. When rainfall does occur it is often of short duration, high intensity storms which lead to run-off and, in many cases., soil erosion. As a result of this waste of resources, the local potential yield of even drought-resistant crops such as sorghum is achieved in only 2-3 years out of every ten. Sustainable development of agriculture in semi-arid Tanzania is very much dependent on effective utilisation of the scarce rainwater. This requires methods for improving soil-moisture availability for crop and pasture, as well as improved practices to make effective use of the soil-water. However, the conventional approach to soil and water conservation has focussed more on the control of soil loss caused by erosion, rather than the loss of water. Seven years of experimental work have proved the potential of RWH for improving maize yields in the Western Pare Lowlands of Tanzania. However, although these experiments have continued far longer than the majority of such experiments, RWH was also only tested on a limited range of soils, topographies and climate. How it would behave under different conditions is difficult to predict from the experimental data alone. It is for these reasons that a modelling approach is needed as an integral component of efforts to develop and promote RWH systems.

Objectif  : Productivity of water in rainfed agriculture improved through accelerated uptake and intensive use of rainwater harvesting.
