Titre : MEDUSE Monitoring and prediction of the atmospheric transport and Deposition of Desert Dust in the Mediterranean region

Région : Méditerranée

Code du projet : ENV4950036 FP4-ENV 2C

Durée : From 1996-03-01 to 1998-04-30

Descriptif
The overall objective of the proposed project is to develop and implement a prototype system for routine monitoring and prediction of the atmospheric transport of desert dust in the Mediterranean region, based on a numerical weather prediction model enhanced by a module for the simulation of the dust uptake, transport and wet and dry deposition. The dust simulations will be validated and further enhanced by means of an extensive measurement programme as detailed below.
The dust monitoring and prediction system will be used both for the simulation of past events and episodes and for experimental forecasts of the atmospheric transport and deposition of desert dust in the Mediterranean region. These regional forecasts will be for typically 2-3 days ahead. In addition to forming the basis for desert dust alerts, these forecasts will be made available to interested agencies and scientists.
