Titre : Restore hillsides to reduce disaster risk (Ethiopia)

Région/Pays : Ethiopie

Code : Project ID 108358

Durée : Project period 01-04-2012 to 31-03-2015

In 2006, Dire Dawa, Ethiopia’s second city, was struck by flash floods. Part of the town was flooded, houses were destroyed and agricultural fields along the river were washed away. 244 people were reported missing, 256 people died and 6.000 people had to be housed in camps. Through CMDRR projects communities rehabilitate eroded hills, restore river banks and organize themselves to reduce risks.

The overall objective of the project is to contribute towards building community resilience through reducing their vulnerability to the impact of natural hazards. This will be done through enhancing the local peoples’ capacities towards flood and drought disaster risk reduction and the establishment of functional community organizations at Kebele level and link it to the Dire Dawa Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction Association.

Community organisation through well-functioning livelihood and DRR committees
