Building resilience against natural hazards of vulnerable communities. Arero area is frequently affected by drought. Majority of households lives as pastoralist and is dependent on natural resources and rainfall. Quality of grazing land deteriorated in recent years. Combined with increasingly longer dry periods, the livelihood of pastoralists is seriously affected. AFD has started a CMDRR project with 4 communities aimed at building resilience to recurrent drought.

The overall objective of this project is to contribute to community resilience building through strengthening the capacity to prepare for, mitigate and effectively respond to recurrent drought in Arero woreda of Borena zone of Oromia Regional State. Asset-poor community members will be empowered to diversify their livelihoods and generate increased income. Local institutions, traditional leaders, and local government will be supported to effectively manage pastoral food security and livelihoods.
