Afghanistan Fortification of Vegetable Oil/Ghee and Wheat Flour

Afghanistan

Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)

Titre : Afghanistan Fortification of Vegetable Oil/Ghee and Wheat Flour

Région /Pays : Afghanistan

Date : 2013

Contexte
The quality of the Afghan diet is generally poor. Food fortification is one way to improve nutrient intake. More than 95 percent of Afghans consume wheat flour and vegetable oil and ghee, the latter being imported mainly from Malaysia, UAE and Pakistan.

Description
GAIN has been providing technical assistance to the Afghan National Standards Authority (ANSA) to develop standards for the fortification of wheat flour and vegetable oil and ghee. In March 2014, ANSA’s supreme council approved these standards, which will soon be published.
In 2013, approximately 30,000 metric tonnes of wheat flour were fortified with iron through the partnership between GAIN and the World Food Programme, reaching approximately 180,000 people. In early 2014, GAIN signed cooperation agreements with three domestic oil refineries to provide technical and financial assistance for introducing vegetable oil and ghee fortified with vitamins A & D.

Objectifs
* Reach 50% of the population with vegetable oil and ghee fortification and 5% of the population with the fortification of wheat flour
* Make sure mandatory legislation and certification for both vehicles are in place
* Finalize agreements with key importers of vegetable oil and ghee to Afghanistan and provide technical and financial assistance to ensure the importation of adequately fortified vegetable oil and ghee
* Expand the WFP-led wheat flour fortification initiative to the new mills throughout the country
