Tajikistan

Titre : Enhancing living standards and food safety of rural people through access to improved veterinary services (Tajikistan)

Pays : Tajikistan

Durée : 1 January 2013 - 31 December 2014

Contexte
After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the civil war, Tajikistan’s livestock production was left in a critical situation. Today, poverty is largely a rural phenomenon in Tajikistan. For many families in rural areas owning livestock is an essential part of maintaining their livelihoods. Having access to veterinary services is a necessity to ensure that livestock is healthy and productive. The veterinarian services do not only provide food and incomes for rural families, it also prevents the spreading of disease between animals, and between livestock and humans.

* Reduce rural poverty through sustained delivery of public and private veterinary services, which contribute to decreasing losses in livestock and to improving the safety of animal products for home consumption or sales.
* Support capacity building of central and local branches of the Tajikistan Veterinary Association allowing delivery of sustainable veterinary and livestock production services to local communities.

Résultats
* The Tajikistan Veterinary Association (TVA) has conducted various training sessions for 407 veterinarians and published several types of training materials for veterinarians.
* TVA has contributed to the allocation of land plots for construction of private veterinary clinics for 747 veterinarians, to the construction of 35 private veterinary cinics, and has supplied 60 veterinary cinics with tables, chairs, shelves, refrigerators, etc.
* TVA has distributed 20 animal fixing equipment, 63 computers, 12 printers to vets and supplied 90 vets with 44 items of equipment (overalls, syringes, instruments needed for surgery and treatment) and veterinary medicines free of charge.
* TVA has contributed to the procurement of 23 vehicles for vets to establish mobile veterinary service.
* Three drafts of decrees have been submitted to the Government of Tajikistan on delivery of private veterinary services, and more than 30 guidelines have been registered at the Ministry of Justice of Tajikistan.
