Regional Agricultural Development Program-West (RADP-W) Afghanistan

Titre : Regional Agricultural Development Program-West (RADP-W) Afghanistan

Pays : Afghanistan

Zone géographique : Western provinces of Herat, Farah and Badghis

Durée : August 2014 – August 2019

Agriculture plays a critical role in the lives of Afghan people, employing more than 70 percent of the population and contributing one-third of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, current agricultural production in Afghanistan lags significantly behind its neighboring countries. The Regional Agriculture Development Program – West (RADP-W) aims to advance food and economic security for rural Afghans in the Western provinces of Herat, Farah and Badghis. To achieve this, the program strengthens farmers’ ability to improve production of wheat, other high-value crops and livestock value chains. These value chain activities enable farmers to increase their commercial viability and competitiveness to meet market demand, and generate more income opportunities and empower families to meet household needs. The program will also support the policy environment through advocacy and dialogue towards strengthening the private sector. RADP-W tries to address numerous bottlenecks and identify lead area firms capable of leveraging change.

RADP-W has four components. Each addresses one or more thematic areas of farmer productivity and profitability, gender, agribusiness and alternative development : • Wheat : To improve productivity, reduce farmers’ losses and strengthen value chain linkages that connect farmers to markets to improve food security and boost household incomes. • High-Value Crops (HVC) : Invest strategically in high-value crops—such as grapes, vegetables and select orchard crops— to strengthen the market competitiveness and development of sustainable commercial exports. • Livestock : Support farmers in maximizing opportunities for improved production, improved nutrition and lessening environmental impacts associated with livestock. • Enabling Environment : Promote dialogue between the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and local producers, processors and traders that will identify obstacles and opportunities to improve the quantity and quality of Afghan goods and will strengthen market access and policies to better support farmers and agribusinesses.

RADP-W will provide training to increase nutrition awareness through cultivation of fruits and vegetables in farm and kitchen gardens, and by producing and serving more milk, meat, and dairy products. The program will also have a competitive, innovative grants program to complement training and value chain facilitation, and strengthen local organizational and business ability in all RADP-W value chains.
