Participatory action research to build resilient agro-sylvo-pastoral systems (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger and Senegal)

Agro-sylvo-pastoral systems

Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR)

Titre : Participatory action research to build resilient agro-sylvo-pastoral systems (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger and Senegal)

Research program : Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS)

Région /Pays : Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger and Senegal

Date  : non précisée

Descriptif
This project aims to promote integrated crop, livestock and tree systems through the development of technological and social innovations. The development of these innovations will be shaped by an improved understanding of farmers’ perceptions and demands. It will also address barriers to the adoption of these integrated systems which spring out of gender and social dimensions. In considering both drivers and barriers to adoption, the innovations that are developed will have the potential to scale up and make a significant impact.

Activités
The specific research activities will include :
1.Testing, evaluating and validating climate smart models of integrated crop-livestock-tree systems with rural communities and other stakeholders. These systems will improve on existing integrated crop-livestock-tree systems by including climate-risk management strategies.
2.Simulating options for improving water and crop-livestock-trees systems under different climate and socio-economic scenarios using models (WaNuLCAS, SWAT, etc.) for informed decision making.
3.Assessing the conditions of success and failure of technological and social innovations that promote climate-smart agriculture

Partenaires
The project is led by the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) closely with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and CCAFS West Africa and will be implemented in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger and Senegal.
