Rapid generation advancement of a chickpea population for farmer participatory selection

Chickpea Farmer Selection

UKAID Department for International Development (R4D)

Titre : Rapid generation advancement of a chickpea population for farmer participatory selection

Projet de recherche pour le Développement : R7838

Pays : India

DFID Programme : Plant Sciences Research

Organismes de mise en œuvre
Lead Institutes : International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT)
Managing Institutes : CAZS Natural Resources, University of Wales, Bangor (CAZS-NR)

Durée : 01-06-2000 à 30-07-2003

Contexte
The overall goal of the project is to enhance income of the farmers, particularly marginal farmers, in five states (Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Orissa) of India by increasing productivity and area of chickpea. The average yield of chickpea in India is about 800 kg ha-1, which is less than one-third of that easily obtained at research stations and in on-farm trials. Over 150 chickpea varieties have been released in India but only limited number of varieties have become popular with farmers. It has been often emphasised that the varieties will have better acceptability of the farmers if they are developed through farmer participatory selection.

Présentation
To advance generations rapidly in chickpea. A number of chickpea varieties are selected every year, but do not become popular with the farmers. By involving farmers in the selection process, it is hoped that the varieties selected will be more readily acceptable to them. The ultimate aim is to reduce non-acceptance of the varieties by the farmers. The farmers are desperate for cash, and chickpea will raise their profits.

Total Cost to DFID : £28,988
