Objectif
The project aims to assist the Sorghum Crop Improvement Programme at ICRISAT understand better genetically-controlled physiological differences in the modulation of flowering between landraces representing the six main growing regions for sorghum in the semi-arid tropics.

Descriptif
During crop growth, plants proceed through three phases of development : (1) pre-inductive, (2) inductive and (3) post-inductive. The duration of all three phases is temperature-dependent, but, in addition, during phase (2) all but the minority of day-neutral plants are sensitive to photoperiod and so the duration of this second phase is photoperiod-dependent too. This phase is therefore crucial in terms of the adaptation of sorghum and other annual crops to different climate and growing seasons. Preliminary and fragmentary evidence from the USA indicated that asynchronous diurnal thermoperiods and photoperiods can influence reproductive development. The results, which have not been repeated, involved asynchronous regimes which were accidentally imposed in controlled environment rooms and so were not necessarily realistic in a practical sense, and mutant isolines rather than genotypes adapted to any particular season or locations.
