Evaluation of soil fertility constraints on smallholder agriculture in the semi-arid tropics

Soil fertility - SAT

UKAID Department for International Development (R4D)

Titre : Evaluation of soil fertility constraints on smallholder agriculture in the semi-arid tropics

Pays : Afrique

Projet de recherche pour le Développement : R5804

DFID Programme : Natural Resources Systems Programme

Organismes de mise en œuvre
Lead Institutes : University of Nottingham
Managing Institutes : HTSPE Limited

Durée : Start Date : 01-10-1993 End Date : 30-03-1996

Objectif
1.) To develop a model for mineralization of soil organic matter and manure, using field data collected by Warren (Reading) in Kenya. 2.) To quantify and model crop responses to mineral nitrogen, utilizing inputs from the soil organic matter model. 3.) To undertake preliminary comparison with existing field data supplied by ICRISAT and CSIRO (Brisbane). 4.) To provide a minimum data entry requirement for the nitrogen model, based on soil classification systems such as QUEFTS. 5.) To review existing models of crop growth and soil phosphate to establish the most appropriate modelling approach. 6.) To develop a soil phosphate model, and simulate crop responses to available phosphate. 7.) To provide a minimum data entry requirement for the phosphate model, based on soil classification systems such as QUEFTS.

Descriptif
The project is aimed at the needs of resource-poor agriculture in the semi-arid tropics for which nutrient constraints on crop growth are a major limitation to agricultural development.
