Objectif
To examine NGO/public sector collaboration in improving agricultural technology and management systems in West Africa, and to explore the scope for NGOs to benefit from government research and specialised expertise, and for government agencies to benefit from NGOs’ experience with adaptive on-farm research and development.

Descriptif
The marginal drylands of West Africa present a risky environment. A large percentage of people in these Sahelian countries are small scale farmers, dependent for their survival on resources which vary widely in both space and time. Such conditions provide a challenge to agricultural research and extension, compounded by the low priority often afforded to agricultural research by government, the attitudes and training of research staff, and the lack of financial resources available. The result is isolation of the national research sector from other government agricultural services as well as voluntary and grass roots organisations.

Total Cost to DFID : £3,800
