Objectifs
The primary objective is to provide tools so that shrubland communities can be restored or rehabilitated. Important aspects in restoring or establishing shrubland communities are the sequential steps of obtaining quality, adapted seed and application of that seed in the appropriate manner. Direct seedlings is a cost-effective alternative in accomplishing these communities. Techniques for field cultivation of native seed and the knowledge perquisite to producing seed without altering genetic makeup at the population level need to be developed. Effective field seed production technology will need to incorporate measures based on specific knowledge of host-pathogen interactions. Seed biology knowledge and databases need to be developed for harvesting, storage, germination syndromes and standards, dormancy and stratification, and on seedbed ecology and seed orchard and plantation culture. Additional knowledge on the role of microorganisms including microbiotic soil crusts needs to be developed.

Descriptif
The research approach is to overcome the two major obstacles in large-scale shrubland ecosystem restoration which are (1) lack of availability and high cost of native plant and other reclamation seed and (2) lack of effective techniques for seeding successfully into weed-dominated sites and under unpredictable semiarid climatic regimes. To accomplish this goal, the following studies will be conducted : Evaluate and enhance the availability of source-identified, select, tested, or cultivar releases of Lewis flax, silver sagebrush, Wyoming big sagebrush x silver sagebrush hybrid, western yarrow, bluebunch wheatgrass, Thurber needlegrass, muttongrass, and forage kochia ; determine factors regulating seed yield for key species such as big sagebrush, antelope bitterbrush, and forage kochia and develop methods for maximizing seed production both in wildland stands and in field cultivation ; develop seeding technology for cost-effective large-scale rehabilitation offcheatgrass-infested wildlands, including use of the herbicide Oust ; examine the feasibility of establishing high-diversity, all-native shrubland communities from seed ; publish the manual "Restoration of western ranges and wildlands" and 20 species contributions in the Forest Service Handbook, "Seeds of woody plants in the United States" ; continue laboratory and field technique development for propagation and establishment of cryptobiotic crusts ; and develop standards for testing quality and viability of seeds of key native and reclamation species.
