Résumé
In Ethiopia, urbanisation is rapidly advancing at a higher rate. This further increases the demand for dairy products in urban centres, but the limited capacity of production results in a gap between demand and supply. This situation also creates a chance for market-oriented urban and peri-urban dairy production, but there is still a substantial lack of understanding of the factors influencing these production systems. In this study, the urban and peri-urban dairy production found in the Northwestern Ethiopian highlands were characterized. Urban dairy farmers specialize on milk production with frequent use of crossbred cows while peri-urban farmers integrate milk production with other farm activities. In this study, several factors are identified which currently limit the potential of urban and peri-urban dairy production to contribute to improved food security and livelihoods of the population. The major constraints were availability and costs of feed, shortage of farm land, low productivity of dairy cows and limited access to technical knowledge, veterinary services and market. To cope with market fluctuation, farmers are traditionally processing milk into milk products with an increased shelf life. Improvement of market infrastructure and strengthening of cooperatives would directly address some of these constraints. This study provides relevant information about two important milk production systems and contributes to a better understanding of the interactions of factors determining the functioning, capacity and stability of these systems
