Résumé
In this study, a participatory scenario planning research approach is used to investigate the dynamics and generate the plausible future scenarios of smallholder livestock production and beekeeping systems in three selected watersheds, Northwestern Ethiopia. A range of methods, including key informant interviews, focus group discussions, workshops, researcher observation and literature search were applied. Qualitative data analysis was done using ATLAS-ti version 7 for the dynamics of smallholder livestock production and beekeeping systems. Ranking, controllability, cross-impact and consistency analysis of driving forces was performed to develop different scenarios. The most important changes in all three watersheds during 2002-2012 : reduction in livestock herd or flock size ; shift in livestock species composition and purpose ; decrease in livestock productivity ; however, some farmers have attempted to improve the livestock husbandry. The three plausible and contrasting scenarios in 2022 are : ’’overall risk’’, ’’livestock production advance’’ and ’’farming on the margins’’. The most important changes in beekeeping system during 2002-2012 : reduction in honeybee colony size per household and decline in honey production ; the adoption of movable-frame and top-bar hives were limited ; few attempts by beekeepers to improve honeybee colony management practices ; reduction in honeybee flora resources base ; increase in honeybee pests and predators attack and agrochemicals exposure. The three plausible and contrasting scenarios in 2022 are : ’’repressive’’, ’’beekeeping advance’’ and ’’beekeeping on the margins’’. Hence, interventions to be made by concerned stakeholders (farmers, development practitioners, researchers, policy makers, etc.) to improve the production systems in the study areas need to focus on addressing the various and complex driving forces through a system wide and context-specific approach
