Résumé
The objective of this master thesis was to analyse the phytochemical and antimicrobiological characteristics of the seeds of Aframomum corrorima (P.J. Braun) P.C.M. Jansen (Zingiberaceae), which is widely used as a spice in Ethiopia. Therefore, steam distillation was carried out to obtain the essential oil of the plant. By GC-MS and GC-FID analyses 33 substances were identified and quantified. The two main ingredients of the essential oil of the seeds are 1,8-cineole (34-37 %), followed by sabinene (15-17 %). Other ingredients that are also present in a relatively high content are (E)-nerolidol ( 8% ), limonene ( 7-8 % ) and -pinene ( approx. 7 % ). The lightmicroscopic analysis showed similarity with cross sections through seeds of Aframomum melegueta and Elettaria cardamomum. Furthermore, in course of this work a hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extract were prepared. According to the result of HPLC-PDA analysis, the hexane and methanol extract were separated by column chromatography on silica gel. The fractions of both extracts were tested for their antimicrobial and resistance - modulating effects on the bacterial strain Mycobacterium smegmatis mc2 155. Although the fractions of the hexane and the methanolic extract showing only weak to moderate growth inhibiting effects against M. smegmatis, some individual fractions exerted significant resistancemodulating effects. In the active fractions K_H_3 and K_H_5 of the hexane extract, (E)-nerolidol was finally identified by preparative TLC and subsequent GC-MS analysis
