Description
The social economic and environmental problems faced by the rural populations in the Brazilian Semi-arid, aggravated by the intensifying conventional ways to use the soil in the Caatinga degradation process, reinforce the importance of raising information about the productive systems practiced in the region, seeking the sustainable systems implementation, based on the rural activities principles practiced in the city of Ibimirim, an inland town in Pernambuco, for the information obtention that could be useful as an assistance for the agro forest systems implementation with the base on a sustainable planning for the rural region development. For this study, different productive unities were personalized through semi-structured interviews with the local agricultures. The interviewed people were selected through the stratified sampling, where each layer was composed by the main activity executed by the family, associated or not to other activities, correspondent to : Group 1 : irrigated agricultural systems ; Group 2 : traditional systems and forest extractivism ; Group 3 : apiculture ; Group 4 : handicraft fishing. For the sampling, 5% were used from the small agriculturist in the groups 1, 2 and 3 and 2% from the group 4, due to this group being more homogeneous. Also, the most utilized forest species by the population in the caatinga were identified. The identified characteristics indicated that the apicultures and the irrigating agriculturists presented the best social economic conditions. Nevertheless, the irrigated activity has contributed for the soil and hydric resource degradation, passing over the limited agriculturist productive autonomy due to the extern raw materials dependence. On the other side, the traditional systems high adaptability and the apiculture conservationist character have generated a low impact under the local ecosystems. The fishing, forest extractivism and forest management are activities that allow the agriculturist maintenance in the rural environment and constitute a source of revenue in the dry weather. The activities diversification and the integration of different productive systems have been a feasible strategy of the productive unities, a concrete possibility for an income generation and improvement in the life quality for the family agriculturists in the region, so the agro forest systems in a multiple use, that seek, overall, the firewood production, forage and alimentary products for the family consume, must be priority in rural development programs for the region sustainability.
