Résumé
Provision of adequate quantities of clean water to villages in developing countries is an important factor in improving the health and social well-being of the communities. There is a general water shortage in southern Zambia during the dry season, and previous studies have shown that ground water is inadequate to meet demands. This study shows that surface water exceeds water requirements and that uneven distribution of surface water throughout the year could explain the shortage. A side-channel reservoir is presented as a method for collecting natural runoff to provide.water of good quality for domestic use. A sand filter allows high quality water to flow into the reservoir under a head provided by temporary flashboards in the stream. Treatment of the excavated reservoir bottom and sides to reduce seepage and use of suspended covers for evaporation control minimize reservoir size.
