Many rural areas, especially in developing nations, are faced with severe erosion problems. Small scale structures play an important role in controlling the concentrated flow erosion. Cost effective struc tures get preferences in most cases for erosion control. Data as re gards the time required in constructing various kinds of small scale erosion control structures by hand labor are scarce in published farm. Twelve small scale structures of different types to control ero sion from concentrated flow were designed and constructed in various sites at the Oracle Agricultural Center of the University of Arizona dur ing 198^-1985. Seven types of combinations of different materials, such as rock-filled gabion, rock-filled single diaphragm fence, rock-filled mini-gabion, concrete block cum mini-gabion, ferrocement, reinforced con crete, and soil-cement were used for the constructions using hand labor and simple tools. Detailed labor, materials and cost data are tabulated. Total man-hours used per cubic meter of construction varied from about 16 mh to 15^ mh for different structures. The cost per cubic meter of con struction varied from $ 125 to $ 878 for different structures. The construction cost per unit of energy dissipated varied from $ 0.09 to $ 1,88 per Joule per second, and the cost per unit discharge varied from $ 327 to $ 5920 per cubic meter per second fccr different structures. The constructed small scale structures were effective in controlling the erosion and improving the degraded conditions in many sites at the QAC.
